EV charger installation in Surrey

The northern edge of the patch — Cranleigh, Haslemere, Dorking and Horley — in the one county that has written its charging rules down: a public network of 200-plus sockets under a five-year Connected Kerb contract, no cables across the pavement, and two network operators to notify.

In short

EV charger installation in Surrey from Solar Squirrel means a dedicated circuit, the right protection at the board and a notification to UK Power Networks east of the Weald line; SSEN west of it, fitted and certificated by the NICEIC-registered electricians who also do our solar and battery work — Cranleigh, Haslemere, Dorking and Horley — 24 to 28 road miles; Reigate on the thirty-mile line. A home charger needs your own off-street parking; where a house has none, the page says what the council offers instead. If the board or the supply needs work first, you hear that at the survey, not on the day.

What decides a charger job in Surrey

Where the car parks, what the supply and the board will take, and who has to be told. These are the local facts behind those three questions in Surrey.

The local facts behind a Surrey charger quote

  1. Approximately 24 road miles to Cranleigh, 25 to Haslemere, 26 to Dorking and 28 to Horley from Washington; Reigate on the thirty-mile line, Guildford at 32 just beyond it (measured 15 October 2026).
  2. Surrey County Council reports over 200 EV chargepoint sockets installed on its behalf by October 2024, under a contract with Connected Kerb signed in February 2023 covering charge points across the next five years — standard 7 kW units, slower 3–5 kW lamp-post units where bollards are not feasible, and 50 kW-plus rapids mostly in car parks (surreycc.gov.uk, reviewed 1 October 2026).
  3. The council states that trailing a cable across the pavement is not allowed in Surrey, and that EV charging cables are only permitted to cross a public footpath if they are safely enclosed in a cable gully; residents request on-street locations through an interactive map on Commonplace.
  4. Two operators: Cranleigh, Dorking, Horley and Reigate are UK Power Networks (group J); Haslemere, Godalming and Guildford are Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (group H) — checked district by district on 15 October 2026. The charging point is notified to whichever your MPAN names.
  5. Surrey County Council’s climate change strategy sets net zero for its own operations by 2030 and for the county by 2050; Mole Valley declared a climate emergency on 18 June 2019; ONS Census 2021 has 73.2% of Mole Valley households owning their home.
  6. Every charging point is a dedicated circuit, protected at the board, tested and certificated by our own NICEIC-registered electricians, and load-managed where an older supply would not take a charger, an oven and a shower at once.
  7. A flat owner or a renter with their own private off-street parking space can claim 75% of the cost of buying and installing a charger, up to £500, under the government’s chargepoint grant (gov.uk, read 19 October 2026); the vehicle has to be on the OZEV-approved list, and the installer assesses whether the space allows safe charging.

Which operator, and the county’s rule

East of the Weald line the charging point is notified to UK Power Networks; west of it, to Scottish and Southern — the form is the same, we read the operator off your MPAN, and nothing about the charger changes. What the county has settled for everyone is the pavement: no trailing cable, a gully or nothing, which makes a house with on-street parking a public-network case and the council’s request map the route. EV charger installation in Surrey: the rollout, the cable-gully rule and what a home charger needs is the county in detail.

The home charger, and the rest of the design

A house with its own space gets the straightforward job — dedicated circuit, the right protection, a load-managed unit on an older supply, test, certificate, notification — and the car is sized into the solar and the battery because it is the largest load the house will add. The Surrey edge has a lower modelled yield than the coast, which makes the battery count for more; solar panels in Surrey, battery storage in Surrey and EV chargers in Dorking are the neighbouring pages, and export tariffs compared lists the overnight tariffs, dated.

Two things people in Surrey ask before they book

“Is Guildford covered for chargers?”

At 32 road miles it sits just beyond our thirty-mile line; Cranleigh, Dorking, Horley and Reigate are inside it. If that line moves, this page will say so.

“Can I run a cable across the pavement if I use a protector?”

No. Surrey County Council states that trailing a cable across the pavement is not allowed, and that cables may only cross a public footpath in a cable gully. A home charger needs your own off-street space.

What you are not committing to

  1. A conversation first — where the car parks, what the board looks like, whether a car is here yet — so no visit is wasted.
  2. A written quote with the circuit, the protection and the notification included, and a separate line for any board work the house needs anyway.
  3. If a home charger is not possible on your parking, you are told so and pointed at the public network instead.
  4. The same electricians fit it, test it, certificate it and notify it: MCS certified · NICEIC Approved Contractor.

Questions we get asked in Surrey

Which Surrey towns do you cover for EV charger installation?

Cranleigh, Haslemere, Dorking and Horley, with Reigate on our thirty-mile line from Washington — the southern edge of the county along the Sussex border. Dorking has a page of its own; the others are covered from this one.

What does Surrey’s public charging network look like?

Over 200 sockets installed on the county council’s behalf by October 2024 under a five-year Connected Kerb contract from February 2023 — 7 kW units, lamp-post units and rapids in car parks — with an online map for requesting on-street locations, per the council’s own page.
