17 miles from the workshop
EV charger installation in Brighton & Hove
Seventeen miles east to a terrace city where most homes have no drive — so the honest page is as much about the council’s thousand-plus public chargepoints as about the home charger a house with its own space can have.
In short
EV charger installation in Brighton & Hove from Solar Squirrel means a dedicated circuit, the right protection at the board and a notification to UK Power Networks, fitted and certificated by the NICEIC-registered electricians who also do our solar and battery work — about 17 road miles from our Washington workshop. A home charger needs your own off-street parking; where a house has none, the page says what the council offers instead. If the board or the supply needs work first, you hear that at the survey, not on the day.
What decides a charger job in Brighton & Hove
Where the car parks, what the supply and the board will take, and who has to be told. These are the local facts behind those three questions in Brighton & Hove.
The local facts behind a Brighton & Hove charger quote
- Approximately 17 road miles east of Washington along the A283 and A27.
- Dense Regency and Victorian terraced stock, much of it three and four storeys and much of it divided into flats, with on-street parking the norm: a home charger needs your own off-street space, and most Brighton houses do not have one.
- Brighton & Hove City Council says over 1,000 chargepoints have been installed in the city to date, that 86% of residents without off-street parking now live within a three-minute walk of a public chargepoint, and that Char.gy has been selected to supply lamp-column chargepoints; residents can tell the council where they would like one (brighton-hove.gov.uk, read 19 October 2026).
- More than thirty conservation areas and a very large listed-building count in the Regency squares: a unit on a side or rear wall is unaffected; on a listed house the position and the cable route can need consent.
- Every charging point is a dedicated circuit, protected at the board, tested and certificated by our own NICEIC-registered electricians and notified to UK Power Networks — BN1, BN2 and BN3 are group J — and load-managed where a pre-war supply would not take a charger, an oven and a shower at once.
- A flat owner or a renter with their own private off-street parking space can claim 75% of the cost of buying and installing a charger, up to £500, under the government’s chargepoint grant (gov.uk, read 19 October 2026); the vehicle has to be on the OZEV-approved list, and the installer assesses whether the space allows safe charging.
- An exposed coastal position: a charger on an outside wall near the front goes in a corrosion-rated enclosure on marine-grade fixings, the same rule we apply to the roof.
A house with a space, and a house without one
Hove’s avenues and the houses with a garage off a twitten, a rear yard with vehicle access or a converted front garden are the home-charger cases: a dedicated circuit from a board that is often three floors away, a load-managed unit on an older supply, and the conservation officer’s view first on a listed house. A terrace with a residents’ bay on the street is not a home-charger case, and a cable across the pavement is not the answer; the council’s network is, and it is a good one by the council’s own numbers.
A flat with an allocated space in a purpose-built block can qualify for the government’s 75% grant up to £500; a flat in a converted house with on-street parking cannot. Battery storage in Brighton & Hove asks the same whose-supply, whose-wall questions of a battery.
The car, the rear slope and the tariff
Where a home charger is possible the car is the largest single load the house will add — our model allows 1,800 kWh a year — and on a Brighton roof that does its solar work on the rear slope or a ballasted flat roof the surplus is better kept in a battery than exported. Solar panels in Brighton & Hove is the roof side; charging an electric car in a Brighton terrace is the town in detail; export tariffs compared lists the cheap-rate overnight tariffs the car makes worth having.
Two things people in Brighton & Hove ask before they book
“Everyone here parks on the street — is a home charger even a thing in Brighton?”
Only for a house or flat with its own off-street space. For the rest the council’s network is the route — over 1,000 chargepoints so far and lamp-column units from Char.gy, with 86% of residents without off-street parking within a three-minute walk, per the council — and we will tell you which case you are in the first call.
“The board is in the basement and the car is out the back — is that a problem?”
It is a cable-route question, and the survey measures it. Three storeys of run inside a terrace is a longer job than a semi with a garage, but it is an ordinary one.
What you are not committing to
- A conversation first — where the car parks, what the board looks like, whether a car is here yet — so no visit is wasted.
- A written quote with the circuit, the protection and the notification included, and a separate line for any board work the house needs anyway.
- If a home charger is not possible on your parking, you are told so and pointed at the public network instead.
- The same electricians fit it, test it, certificate it and notify it: MCS certified · NICEIC Approved Contractor.
Questions we get asked in Brighton & Hove
Do you install EV chargers in Brighton & Hove?
Yes, for a house or flat with its own off-street parking space — seventeen road miles from our Washington base. A dedicated circuit, protection at the board, a tested and certificated installation and the notification to UK Power Networks, by the electricians who do our solar and battery work.
What can I do if my Brighton house has no off-street parking?
Use the public network, which the council says now has over 1,000 chargepoints, with lamp-column units from Char.gy and 86% of residents without off-street parking within a three-minute walk of one — and tell the council where you would like a chargepoint; it takes requests.
