Solar panels in Shoreham-by-Sea

Ten road miles down the A283 from the workshop, Shoreham-by-Sea is a harbour town with a working port, five conservation areas close by and a coastline that decides how we specify fixings before we have seen the roof.

What we find on Shoreham-by-Sea roofs

The harbour-side streets are tight for scaffold and the coast is hard on fixings, so the survey here spends as long on access and corrosion as on which way the roof faces. Inland of the railway the jobs are more conventional, and the question becomes the battery wall.

Distance, geography, housing stock and the planning position all change how a system gets designed. These are the ones that decide it in Shoreham-by-Sea.

What we take into account here

  1. Approximately 10 road miles south-east of Washington via the A283, about a quarter of an hour outside the summer traffic.
  2. Adur District Council lists Old Shoreham, Shoreham-by-Sea, Kingston Buci, Southlands and Southwick as conservation areas, with Article 4 directions that remove some permitted development rights for alterations to houses — so a roof on a principal elevation inside one is checked before panels are planned, not after.
  3. Adur & Worthing Councils declared a climate emergency in July 2019 and committed to a carbon-neutral council by 2030 and net zero across the area by 2045; the council’s own solar installations include Shadwells Court and Eastbrook Manor Community Centre.
  4. ONS Census 2021, Shoreham wards: 34.6% of households in semi-detached houses, 24.9% in flats and 71.8% owner-occupied — a town with a large stock of owner-occupied semis, which is where most of the usable roofs are.
  5. A built-up-area population of 23,676 at the 2021 Census, sitting between the Adur estuary and the Channel. Salt-laden air within a mile of the front means marine-grade fixings, clamps and containment are specified as standard, not on request.
  6. The distribution network here is UK Power Networks (grid supply point group J), who receive the G98 or G99 notification for any inverter we fit; the MPAN on your bill confirms it.
  7. Community energy is live in the town: the Shoreham Society reported in September 2025 on not-for-profit community schemes that put rooftop solar on local buildings through community share offers.

Questions we get asked in Shoreham-by-Sea

Is Shoreham-by-Sea inside your normal area for solar panels?

Yes, comfortably. It is about ten road miles from our Washington base down the A283, and Southwick is covered from the same page. Coastal jobs are a large part of what we do, which is why marine-grade fixings are our standard specification rather than an extra.

My house is in one of the Shoreham conservation areas. Can I still have solar panels?

Usually, but it needs checking first. Adur District Council lists Old Shoreham, Shoreham-by-Sea, Kingston Buci, Southlands and Southwick as conservation areas, some with Article 4 directions that remove permitted development rights for alterations. We check the address against the council’s maps before the survey and tell you plainly whether an application is needed.

Southwick is covered from this page rather than having one of its own — the same vans and the same survey.

The systems that suit Shoreham-by-Sea

Three arrangements cover most of what goes on a West Sussex roof. Which one your house wants is decided at the survey, on the roof itself — not from a satellite image.

The next step

Book your free survey

Thirty to forty-five minutes, at your house, at no cost. We look at the roof, the fuse board and how you actually use the place — then send you a clear quote with the assumptions shown.

If solar genuinely won’t pay for itself on your usage, we’ll say so and save us both an afternoon.

Rather see the numbers before you speak to anybody? Put your own bill on the house — it works out the size, the saving and the payback while you watch, and brings them down to this form with you.

So we can tell you straight away if you're in our patch.
