Battery storage in Surrey

The northern edge of the patch — Cranleigh, Haslemere, Dorking and Horley, up the A24 and the A281, with Reigate on the thirty-mile line. Two network operators split the part of Surrey we cover, and which one you are on is the first thing a battery survey here settles.

In short

Battery storage in Surrey from Solar Squirrel means a stack sized from your own consumption — not a price list — sited where the fire-safety specification allows, notified to UK Power Networks east of the Weald line; SSEN west of it by the electricians who fit and certificate it, and quoted without a VAT line, because domestic solar panels and battery storage are currently zero-rated. Cranleigh, Haslemere, Dorking and Horley — 24 to 28 road miles; Reigate on the thirty-mile line If a battery will not pay on your usage, the survey says so.

What decides a battery job in Surrey

Where the stack can go, what the board and the supply will take, and how much the house actually uses after dark. These are the local facts behind those three questions in Surrey.

The local facts behind a Surrey battery quote

  1. Approximately 24 road miles to Cranleigh, 25 to Haslemere, 26 to Dorking and 28 to Horley from Washington; Reigate sits on the thirty-mile line and Guildford, at 32, is just beyond it (road distances measured on 15 October 2026).
  2. Two operators: Cranleigh, Dorking, Horley and Reigate are UK Power Networks (grid supply point group J), while Haslemere, Godalming and Guildford are Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (group H) — checked district by district on 15 October 2026. The MPAN on your bill says which receives the G98 notification or G99 application.
  3. The Surrey Hills National Landscape, designated in 1958, stretches across a quarter of the county and takes in the Greensand Hills around Haslemere. Inside it the roof-slope rules match a conservation area and a listed house needs consent for the roof; a battery indoors sits outside all of that.
  4. PVGIS 5.2 puts a south-facing 4.5 kWp array at Dorking at about 1,037 kWh per kWp a year (35° pitch, 14% system loss, read 15 October 2026) — less than the coast, which is exactly the case where keeping the surplus matters more.
  5. Surrey County Council’s climate change strategy sets net zero for its own operations by 2030 and for the county by 2050, with a stated target of 15% of energy from solar PV by 2032 and a 66% cut in domestic housing emissions by 2035 against business as usual.
  6. Mole Valley District Council, which covers Dorking, declared a climate emergency on 18 June 2019 and voted for carbon neutrality by 2030; ONS Census 2021 has 73.2% of Mole Valley households owning their home, so the decision to fit a battery is usually the owner’s to make.

Which operator, which form

East of the Weald line — Dorking, Horley, Reigate, Cranleigh — the inverter is notified to UK Power Networks. West of it — Haslemere, Godalming — it goes to Scottish and Southern. The form is the same either way: G98 after the event for an inverter up to 16 amps per phase, a G99 application before energising for anything larger. What differs is the response time on a G99, which we plan the job around. We read the operator off your MPAN, not your postcode, because the boundary wanders.

Battery storage on the Surrey edge: which operator gets your G99 is the longer read; solar panels in Surrey covers the roofs, and what solar costs in Surrey carries the worked example a battery changes.

A lower yield makes the battery matter more

Dorking’s modelled yield is below the coast’s, and more of the Surrey edge is shaded by the Greensand and the trees. A house that makes less exports less, but it also means that whatever is made is worth keeping: a battery sized to the evening load turns a modest Surrey array into a system that covers more of the day. We size from half-hourly data or bills, and we say when the sums do not support a battery at all. The county picture is on the battery storage page; Horsham is the nearest town page south of the line, and grants and schemes in Surrey covers what the county and the districts offer.

What a battery changes on the bill

Without storage a typical home uses somewhere around half of what its panels make and exports the rest; the Smart Export Guarantee pays for those exported units, but at less than you pay to buy them back in the evening. A battery sized to the evening load keeps most of that surplus at home. The size is the whole question, which is why we read half-hourly consumption from the meter where it will give it and the bills where it will not, and why the calculator asks for your bill before it says a number.

Two things people in Surrey ask before they book

“Is Guildford covered?”

At 32 road miles it sits just beyond our thirty-mile line; Cranleigh, Dorking, Horley and Reigate are inside it. If that line moves, this page will say so.

“We are inside the Surrey Hills — does the National Landscape affect a battery?”

Not a battery indoors. The National Landscape rules are about the roof and anything visible from outside; the array is where that conversation happens, and it is on the solar page.

What you are not committing to

  1. A survey that reads your real consumption and the wall the stack would go on, before any size is named.
  2. A written quote with the sizing reasons in it, and the operator notification and the certificate included rather than extra.
  3. If the honest answer is a smaller battery, or none, that is the quote you get.
  4. The same electricians fit it, notify it and sign the certificate: MCS certified · NICEIC Approved Contractor.

Questions we get asked in Surrey

Which Surrey towns do you cover for battery storage?

Cranleigh, Haslemere, Dorking and Horley, with Reigate on the thirty-mile line from our Washington base — the southern edge of the county along the Sussex border, not Woking, Epsom or the Thames towns.

Does a Surrey battery notification go to SSEN or UK Power Networks?

Both operators serve the part of Surrey we cover: UKPN for Cranleigh, Dorking, Horley and Reigate, SSEN for Haslemere and Godalming, checked on 15 October 2026. We confirm yours from the MPAN on your bill and make the G98 or G99 ourselves.

The next step

Get a Surrey battery quote

Tell us the house, the roof if there is one, and whether you already have panels. A written quote follows, sized from your own consumption, with the reasons in it — from the electricians who will fit and sign for it.

If solar genuinely won’t pay for itself on your usage, we’ll say so and save us both an afternoon.

Rather see the numbers before you speak to anybody? Put your own bill on the house — it works out the size, the saving and the payback while you watch, and brings them down to this form with you.

So we can tell you straight away if you're in our patch.
