17 miles from the workshop
Battery storage in Brighton & Hove
Seventeen miles east to the biggest, steepest, most subdivided roofscape on the coast. Brighton batteries are a question of ownership and position before they are a question of size: whose supply, whose wall, and whether the house is one home or four.
In short
Battery storage in Brighton & Hove from Solar Squirrel means a stack sized from your own consumption — not a price list — sited where the fire-safety specification allows, notified to UK Power Networks by the electricians who fit and certificate it, and quoted without a VAT line, because domestic solar panels and battery storage are currently zero-rated. About 17 road miles from our Washington workshop. If a battery will not pay on your usage, the survey says so.
What decides a battery job in Brighton & Hove
Where the stack can go, what the board and the supply will take, and how much the house actually uses after dark. These are the local facts behind those three questions in Brighton & Hove.
The local facts behind a Brighton & Hove battery quote
- Approximately 17 road miles east of Washington along the A283 and A27.
- Dense Regency and Victorian terraced stock, much of it three and four storeys and much of it divided into flats. In a single house the stack goes to a basement, a rear addition or a boarded loft under PAS 63100; in a converted house the first question is which supply is yours and whose wall you are proposing to use.
- More than thirty conservation areas across the city and a very large listed-building count in the Regency squares. A battery is indoors or at the rear and nothing visible changes; on a listed house the position and the cable runs can touch listed building consent, which we raise before quoting.
- The BN1, BN2 and BN3 districts are on UK Power Networks (grid supply point group J, checked 15 October 2026): the G98 notification for an inverter up to 16 amps per phase (3.68 kW), or the G99 application above that, goes to UKPN; the MPAN on your bill confirms it.
- Brighton & Hove City Council runs a Net Zero programme with a citywide energy study behind it, and its conservation-area pages carry their own guidance on solar panels and other measures in designated areas — worth reading before you ring anyone, us included.
- An exposed coastal position: an outside enclosure anywhere near the front goes on marine-grade fixings in a corrosion-rated housing, or the stack goes inside — the same rule we apply to the roof fixings.
One house, or four flats
A whole terrace house is a straightforward survey: the basement if it has one, a rear addition or the loft if it does not, and a size that comes from your own evening consumption. A house converted into flats is a different job. Each flat has its own supply and meter, the common parts have another, and a battery serves one of them. It needs the freeholder or managing agent’s agreement, a position that meets the fire-safety specification, and a cable route that does not cross someone else’s part of the building. Some conversions can; a good many cannot, and we say which at the survey rather than after a deposit.
The array side — rear slopes and ballasted flat roofs doing most of the work — is on solar panels in Brighton & Hove. Can a Brighton flat have a battery? is the honest long answer.
Hove, the Regency squares and the listed question
Hove’s avenues and the Regency squares put a lot of listed buildings in the mix. The stack is indoors and the outside of the building is untouched, but where the house is listed the position and the cable runs can need consent, so we put a drawing to the conservation officer first. The county picture and the lines we fit are on the battery storage page; Shoreham-by-Sea and Burgess Hill are the neighbouring pages, electricians in Brighton & Hove is the same team on the board, and the East Sussex edge starts at Lewes.
What a battery changes on the bill
Without storage a typical home uses somewhere around half of what its panels make and exports the rest; the Smart Export Guarantee pays for those exported units, but at less than you pay to buy them back in the evening. A battery sized to the evening load keeps most of that surplus at home. The size is the whole question, which is why we read half-hourly consumption from the meter where it will give it and the bills where it will not, and why the calculator asks for your bill before it says a number.
Two things people in Brighton & Hove ask before they book
“We are the top-floor flat — the roof is ours to use, surely?”
Usually the roof belongs to the freeholder even when your flat is the one under it, and the battery needs a position and a supply that are yours. Lease first, then survey — we will read it with you.
“Our only space is the basement — is that a problem?”
The specification cares about location, clearances and detection; we care about the wall and the air as well. A dry, ventilated basement is often the best position in the city. A wet one is not a position at all, and we say so.
What you are not committing to
- A survey that reads your real consumption and the wall the stack would go on, before any size is named.
- A written quote with the sizing reasons in it, and the operator notification and the certificate included rather than extra.
- If the honest answer is a smaller battery, or none, that is the quote you get.
- The same electricians fit it, notify it and sign the certificate: MCS certified · NICEIC Approved Contractor.
Questions we get asked in Brighton & Hove
Can a flat in Brighton have a home battery?
Sometimes. It needs the freeholder or managing agent’s consent, a supply and meter that are yours, a position that meets PAS 63100, and a cable route inside your own part of the building. We tell you at the survey which of those your flat has, and we do not take a deposit before that.
Which operator receives the battery notification in BN1, BN2 and BN3?
UK Power Networks — group J across the city, checked on 15 October 2026. G98 for an inverter up to 16 amps per phase, a G99 application above that, both made by us before the system is energised.
