Battery storage in Lewes
Twenty-three miles along the A27 to the largest town in any National Park. Lewes batteries are retrofits more often than not — Solar Together put the panels there first — in flint-and-tile houses where the cellar is usually the answer and the listed interior is the question.
In short
Battery storage in Lewes from Solar Squirrel means a stack sized from your own consumption — not a price list — sited where the fire-safety specification allows, notified to UK Power Networks by the electricians who fit and certificate it, and quoted without a VAT line, because domestic solar panels and battery storage are currently zero-rated. About 23 road miles from our Washington workshop. If a battery will not pay on your usage, the survey says so.
What decides a battery job in Lewes
Where the stack can go, what the board and the supply will take, and how much the house actually uses after dark. These are the local facts behind those three questions in Lewes.
The local facts behind a Lewes battery quote
- Approximately 23 road miles east of Washington along the A27 (measured 16 October 2026); Peacehaven is 26 and Newhaven just over the thirty-mile line.
- The BN7 and BN8 districts are on UK Power Networks (grid supply point group J, checked 18 October 2026): the G98 notification for an inverter up to 16 amps per phase (3.68 kW), or the G99 application above that, goes to UKPN, the same operator as Brighton and the coast.
- Almost all the historic town is a conservation area — designated 1970, extended by the National Park Authority in 2012 — with an Article 4 Direction over it. A battery indoors sits outside that question; the array and any outside enclosure are where the Authority looks.
- The National Park Authority describes Lewes as the largest town in any National Park, lying on the Ouse where it cuts through the chalk of the Downs. A battery indoors or in an outbuilding is an electrical installation and the Park does not come into it.
- Solar Together Sussex reported over 1,600 homes fitted by its third phase in 2023 and offered retrofit battery storage to households that already had panels; a good share of Lewes battery surveys therefore start with an inverter that is already on the wall.
- PVGIS 5.2 models a south-facing 4.5 kWp array at Lewes at about 1,177 kWh per kWp a year (read 15 October 2026) — the best modelled yield of the three regions we publish, so the surplus a battery can keep is larger here.
- ONS Census 2021: 71.1% of households in Lewes district owned their home and private renting had risen to 16.9%, so in a growing share of houses the first question is the landlord’s; Lewes District Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 with net zero by 2030.
Adding a battery to the panels Lewes already has
The survey starts at the wall where the inverter already is: its make and age, its paperwork, what the array actually produces, and whether that inverter can take a battery directly or needs a battery inverter alongside it — a cleaner job than it sounds. Then the board, which on a house whose panels went in some years ago is sometimes the real work. Then the position under PAS 63100, which in a Lewes town house is usually a dry cellar or a utility. The new inverter is notified to UK Power Networks and the handover pack covers both halves of the system; we hold our own quote against the Solar Together prices, which remain a fair yardstick for anyone’s.
Adding a battery to panels you already have in East Sussex is the longer read; solar panels in Lewes is the roof side.
Cellars, flint and the listed question
The historic core is flint and tile with a great many listed houses, and a listed interior is where a battery can need consent even though the outside of the building is untouched: the position of the stack and the route of the cables are the two things the conservation officer looks at, so a drawing goes to the National Park Authority before we quote. Where the house is not listed, the cellar or the utility is agreed in a minute and the work is in the sizing — half-hourly consumption or bills, never a price list. The county picture is on the battery storage page; the East Sussex edge covers Peacehaven and the coast, and Brighton & Hove is the next page west.
What a battery changes on the bill
Without storage a typical home uses somewhere around half of what its panels make and exports the rest; the Smart Export Guarantee pays for those exported units, but at less than you pay to buy them back in the evening. A battery sized to the evening load keeps most of that surplus at home. The size is the whole question, which is why we read half-hourly consumption from the meter where it will give it and the bills where it will not, and why the calculator asks for your bill before it says a number.
Two things people in Lewes ask before they book
“Our panels went in under Solar Together — will a battery work with them?”
In most cases. The survey reads the existing inverter first: some take a battery directly, others need a battery inverter alongside, and either is a tidy job. What we check before promising anything is the board and the paperwork the original installation left.
“The house is listed — does a battery need consent?”
Possibly, for the position and the cable runs rather than the kit. We put a drawing to the National Park Authority’s conservation officer before we quote; that costs you nothing and settles it either way.
What you are not committing to
- A survey that reads your real consumption and the wall the stack would go on, before any size is named.
- A written quote with the sizing reasons in it, and the operator notification and the certificate included rather than extra.
- If the honest answer is a smaller battery, or none, that is the quote you get.
- The same electricians fit it, notify it and sign the certificate: MCS certified · NICEIC Approved Contractor.
Questions we get asked in Lewes
Who receives the notification for a battery in Lewes?
UK Power Networks — BN7 and BN8 are group J on the 18 October 2026 lookup. G98 for an inverter up to 16 amps per phase, a G99 application above that, both made by us before the system is energised.
Can a battery go in the cellar of a Lewes town house?
Often, yes. A dry, ventilated cellar suits PAS 63100 on location and clearances; the survey checks the detection, the cable route to the board and, on a listed house, whether consent is needed for either.
