Battery storage in East Sussex

The eastern end of the South Coast in our own coverage statement: Lewes under the Downs and the coast down to Peacehaven and Newhaven. A lot of these roofs already have panels — Solar Together put many of them there — which makes a battery added to panels you already have the question this page is written for.

In short

Battery storage in East Sussex from Solar Squirrel means a stack sized from your own consumption — not a price list — sited where the fire-safety specification allows, notified to UK Power Networks by the electricians who fit and certificate it, and quoted without a VAT line, because domestic solar panels and battery storage are currently zero-rated. Lewes and the coast to Peacehaven — 23 to 26 road miles; Newhaven just over the line If a battery will not pay on your usage, the survey says so.

What decides a battery job in East Sussex

Where the stack can go, what the board and the supply will take, and how much the house actually uses after dark. These are the local facts behind those three questions in East Sussex.

The local facts behind a East Sussex battery quote

  1. Approximately 23 road miles to Lewes and 26 to Peacehaven from Washington along the A27; Newhaven, at 31, is just over the thirty-mile line, and Seaford, Uckfield and Eastbourne are beyond it (road distances measured on 15 October 2026).
  2. The whole of this end of East Sussex is UK Power Networks territory — grid supply point group J for the BN7, BN9, BN25 and TN22 districts, checked on 15 October 2026 — so the G98 notification for an inverter up to 16 amps per phase (3.68 kW), or the G99 application for anything larger, goes to UKPN.
  3. Solar Together Sussex — the group-buying scheme the Sussex councils run with iChoosr — reported over 1,600 homes fitted by its third phase in 2023, with retrofit battery storage offered to households that already had panels; its prices are a fair yardstick to hold any quote against, ours included.
  4. Lewes sits inside the South Downs National Park, whose authority is the planning authority there. A battery indoors is an electrical installation and sits outside the Park question; on a listed house in Lewes the position and the cable runs go to the conservation officer first.
  5. PVGIS 5.2 puts a south-facing 4.5 kWp array at Lewes at about 1,177 kWh per kWp a year (35° pitch, 14% system loss, read 15 October 2026) — the best modelled yield of the three regions we publish, so the surplus a battery can keep is larger here.
  6. ONS Census 2021: Lewes district had around 99,900 residents, 71.1% of households owned their home and private renting had risen to 16.9% — so in a growing share of houses the first question is the landlord’s, not the tenant’s.
  7. Lewes District Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and committed to net zero by 2030, using Newhaven as a test case for a whole town moving to net zero; the coast from Peacehaven to Newhaven is as exposed as Worthing, so any outside enclosure is marine-rated or the stack goes inside.

Adding a battery to panels you already have

The survey starts with what is there: the existing inverter and its paperwork, the array’s age and output, the board, and where a stack can go under PAS 63100. Some existing inverters can take a battery directly; others mean a separate battery inverter alongside, which is a cleaner job than it sounds. Either way the new inverter is notified to UK Power Networks and the handover pack covers both halves of the system. We size from your half-hourly consumption or bills, and we hold the quote against the Solar Together yardstick ourselves.

Adding a battery to panels you already have in East Sussex is the longer read; solar panels in East Sussex and grants and schemes in East Sussex sit alongside it.

Lewes, Peacehaven and the landlord question

Lewes is flint and tile under the Downs with a listed core: the stack goes indoors, the outside is untouched, and on a listed house the conservation officer sees a drawing first. Peacehaven and Newhaven are salt-air bungalows on the clifftop: any outside enclosure is marine-rated or the battery goes inside, and the garage is usually the answer. Nearly one home in six in the district is privately rented, so in a good many houses the first question is the landlord’s — we will talk to either side. The county picture is on the battery storage page, what solar costs in East Sussex carries the worked example, and Brighton & Hove is the next page west.

What a battery changes on the bill

Without storage a typical home uses somewhere around half of what its panels make and exports the rest; the Smart Export Guarantee pays for those exported units, but at less than you pay to buy them back in the evening. A battery sized to the evening load keeps most of that surplus at home. The size is the whole question, which is why we read half-hourly consumption from the meter where it will give it and the bills where it will not, and why the calculator asks for your bill before it says a number.

Two things people in East Sussex ask before they book

“Our panels went in under Solar Together — can you add a battery to them?”

Usually, yes. The survey reads the existing inverter and its paperwork first; some can take a battery directly, others need a separate battery inverter alongside. Either way we notify UK Power Networks and the handover pack covers the whole system.

“Is Seaford or Eastbourne covered?”

Both sit beyond our thirty-mile line from Washington, as does Uckfield; Lewes and Peacehaven are inside it and Newhaven is just over. If the line moves, this page will say so.

What you are not committing to

  1. A survey that reads your real consumption and the wall the stack would go on, before any size is named.
  2. A written quote with the sizing reasons in it, and the operator notification and the certificate included rather than extra.
  3. If the honest answer is a smaller battery, or none, that is the quote you get.
  4. The same electricians fit it, notify it and sign the certificate: MCS certified · NICEIC Approved Contractor.

Questions we get asked in East Sussex

Can a battery be added to existing solar panels in Lewes?

Yes, in most cases. We check the existing inverter, the array’s output and the board, then size the battery from your own consumption; the new inverter is notified to UK Power Networks under G98 or applied for under G99 before it is energised.

Which operator receives the notification for BN7, BN9 and BN25?

UK Power Networks — group J across this end of the county, checked on 15 October 2026. We make the notification or application ourselves, and the MPAN on your bill is what we check it against.

The next step

Get a East Sussex battery quote

Tell us the house, the roof if there is one, and whether you already have panels. A written quote follows, sized from your own consumption, with the reasons in it — from the electricians who will fit and sign for it.

If solar genuinely won’t pay for itself on your usage, we’ll say so and save us both an afternoon.

Rather see the numbers before you speak to anybody? Put your own bill on the house — it works out the size, the saving and the payback while you watch, and brings them down to this form with you.

So we can tell you straight away if you're in our patch.
