Home batteries in Littlehampton when you don't own the roof
A quarter of Littlehampton is flats: what a battery needs when the roof is the freeholder's, and why BN17 and BN16 notify two different operators.
Two arrays on one roof, from one of our own installations. A roof like this is the easy half of a Littlehampton battery job.
Littlehampton is twelve miles south-west along the A280 and A259, flat, coastal, and with a more mixed housing stock than its seaside reputation suggests. The town’s own wards at the 2021 Census are roughly a quarter semis, a quarter terraces and a quarter flats, with detached houses about one home in six. The semis are among the easiest battery houses on our patch. The flats are the ones this post is for.
When the roof is not yours
In a flat or a leasehold house, who owns the roof is the first question for solar — and for a battery the question moves indoors. A stack needs a position that meets PAS 63100:2024, the fire-safety specification home batteries have been installed to since April 2026, on location, clearances and detection; and that position has to be in your own part of the building, on a supply and meter that are yours, with the freeholder’s or managing agent’s consent. A purpose-built block with a ground-floor flat, its own meter and a utility sometimes has all of that. A converted house usually struggles. We would rather say so before a survey than after a deposit, so send us the lease wording on alterations and a photo of the meter cupboard and we will tell you whether it is worth your time.
What the semi gets for free
A post-war Littlehampton semi has a garage or a side utility, a solid wall and a board within a sensible run: the position is agreed in a minute, and the work is in the sizing. We read half-hourly consumption from the smart meter where it will give it and the bills where it will not, and the battery is sized to the evening load of your house. If the load is small, the honest battery is a modest one, and we quote it that way rather than the way that suits us.
The river and the front
Direct maritime exposure at the seafront and along the Arun. For the roof that means corrosion-appropriate fixings as standard. For a battery it means an outside position only in a corrosion-rated enclosure on the same grade of fixings — or the stack goes inside, which in a semi it usually does anyway. Conservation areas cover the historic riverside and neighbouring Rustington and Angmering, but the bulk of the housing sits outside them and a battery indoors never touches the question.
Two operators in one town
This is the fact most people in Littlehampton do not know. On the 15 October 2026 lookup the BN17 district is Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, group H, while BN16 — Rustington and East Preston — is UK Power Networks, group J. The form is the same either way: a G98 notification for an inverter up to 16 amps per phase, a G99 application before energising for anything larger. We read the operator from the MPAN on your bill, not the postcode, and we make the notification ourselves. Domestic solar panels and battery storage currently attract zero-rate VAT.
Where to go next
Battery storage in Littlehampton is the page for the job and solar panels in Littlehampton is the roof. Either side of the town, Worthing’s post covers the terrace with no garage and Chichester’s the townhouse cellar and the listed question. The county picture is on the battery storage page; the lines we fit are compared in Sigenergy vs Fox ESS vs Hanchu.
