Batteries
Four Haywards Heath houses, four battery positions
The old core, the railway-town terraces, the post-war estates and Bolnore Village each put a home battery somewhere different. A walk through all four.
A Hanchu ESS inverter, gateway and battery on one wall, from one of our own jobs. Which wall is the Haywards Heath question.
Haywards Heath is nineteen miles from the workshop and the largest of the Mid Sussex towns we cover — 40,184 people at the 2021 Census across five wards. What makes it unusual for a battery survey is that it is four towns in one postcode district: an old core around Muster Green, a railway town around the station, post-war estates, and Bolnore Village. Each puts the stack somewhere different. Here they are in turn.
The old core: cellar or outbuilding, nothing on the front
Mid Sussex lists five conservation areas in and around the town — Muster Green (1979), Franklands Village, Lucastes, The Heath and Lewes Road (all 1989) — and the period houses inside them often have a cellar or an outbuilding. Either suits PAS 63100, the fire-safety specification home batteries have been installed to since April 2026: cool, out of the living space, with the clearances the stack needs. The conservation area watches the front elevation. A battery indoors or on a rear wall never touches it.
The railway town: no garage, so the honest conversation
The terraces around the station are the hardest houses in the town for a battery, because they usually have neither a garage nor a utility. The positions that work are a rear addition, a solid-floored utility if one has been added, or a boarded loft surveyed with the joists and the hatch in mind. If none of those exists we say so before anyone quotes, rather than squeezing a stack under the stairs and calling it compliant.
The post-war estates: the garage, measured
The simplest job in the town. An integral or attached garage, a solid wall, a short run to the board. We still mark out the clearances on the wall and the floor so they survive the next ten years of bikes and freezers.
Bolnore Village: a smaller battery than you were quoted
Modern, well insulated, and with a smaller evening load than most people guess. A battery is sized to the load, not to the house, and in Bolnore the honest battery is quite often smaller than the one first quoted elsewhere. We read half-hourly consumption from the meter where it will give it and the bills where it will not, and if the sums do not support a battery at all on your data, the quote says that.
The village edge
Lindfield and Cuckfield, both with conservation areas dating from 1969, are separate parishes next door and covered from the town page. In their older houses the outbuilding is often the better wall than the house, and we survey the outbuilding and the cable run back to the board as one job.
The same paperwork in all four
RH16 is UK Power Networks, group J. An inverter up to 16 amps per phase is notified under G98 after it is fitted; anything larger is applied for under G99 before it is energised. We do both, and the certificate and the notification are in the handover pack. Mid Sussex’s own net zero commitment — its own operations by 2040, voted on 2 November 2022 — sits alongside its pointer to the Warmer Homes scheme for eligible households, which is worth checking before a battery is sized.
Where to go next
Battery storage in Haywards Heath is the page for the job; solar panels in Haywards Heath is the roof. Burgess Hill’s post is the garage question in detail, and Billingshurst’s explains what changes when the operator is SSEN rather than UKPN. The county picture is on the battery storage page.
